When we are going through troubling times, being grateful is the last thing on our mind. Sure, some of us may send up a thankful prayer every now and then, but most of us get sidetracked by worrying about our dilemmas.
Worry can shake up even the most fervent person. Few amongst us can claim to be completely worry free all the time. But by worrying, you put your mind and body through stress, anxiety, and all sorts of physical discomfort. Worrying about your problems does not help add a single day to your life. It may, however, subtract it.
Worrying can damper the most good-natured person’s spirits. It can lead to unhealthy habits such as insomnia, eating disorders, excessive drinking, substance abuse, and other band-aid type addictive behaviors. I call these band-aid type behaviors because they don’t really resolve the problems, they just end up covering them and then they too become additional problems – thus, the cycle repeats.
In contrast, if we take the same energy and apply it towards being grateful, we can have a totally different experience.
By practicing gratitude, you give your mind and body an opportunity to experience calmness, joy, and hope. You can give yourself an opportunity to breathe and think about productive ways to respond to your issues rather than reacting to them.
It isn't that difficult to be grateful. You can start by being grateful for the small blessings around you.
It could be people who support and love you. It could be the one meal you had today, even if it was only a can of tuna fish. It could be that you sleep in a warm space, even if it is on an old mattress on the floor. It could be that you still have legs that could carry you to that job interview, even if you didn’t get the job. It could be that your body is properly covered, even if you are wearing old clothes. It could be that you saw a bird take flight, even if it was a sparrow and not a peacock. It could be that you enjoy the day, even if it is raining outside.
Sure, your problems may not disappear right away if you choose to be grateful, but you do gain peace and strength of mind that can help you to resolve your issues in a productive way.
Each day, you have the choice to either be grateful or be worried. By being grateful, you keep your inner power; by worrying, you give up all your power to external forces. You get to decide what you give your power to: yourself or others.
